About Us
People: Vocal Sounds of Oklahoma is the award-winning a cappella chorus from the Oklahoma City chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. We're men from various walks of life who love to sing four-part close-knit harmony. Very few of us have formal music training yet we are dedicated to musical excellence in performances and competition.
Purpose: Our mission is to share the love of four-part a cappella singing, with excellence, with our community while encouraging others to join us in barbershop harmony.
Performance: Vocal Sounds of Oklahoma produces at least two major shows per year. We have also performed for various functions, civic groups, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Arts Council. Our barbershop quartets provide entertainment throughout the year, including the delivery of Singing Valentines. We sing a variety of styles of music from memory and without accompaniment including swing, jazz, gospel, folk songs, show tunes, and barbershop. If you love to perform, this is the place to be.
Awards: Music Central and The OK Chorale (the two choruses that merged in 2016 to form Vocal Sounds of Oklahoma) won multiple division (parts of OK, TX, and AR) and Southwestern district championships (five states including Texas) in the Barbershop Harmony Society. The choruses placed as high as 18th and 6th, respectively, in Society international competitions. As Vocal Sounds of Oklahoma, we won our district's 2022 Men's Chorus Championship, and look forward to continuing the tradition of competing successfully at all levels.
Preparation: With any great endeavor, training, education, and practice are required. We are fortunate to have two co-directors -- Greg Rogers and Mark Winn -- who are each highly experienced and accomplished. Vocal coaches are brought in from time to time from outside the chorus. Methods and techniques in vocal production are provided to help us grow as a chorus as well as individual singers. Rehearsal activities include vocal warmups, tag singing, sectional rehearsals, learning new songs, reviewing current repertoire, and impromptu quartets, all mixed with great fellowship and fun.
